The first manned mission to the Moon in over 50 years has launched from Cape Canaveral.
A crewed mission to the Moon has launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida – the first in over 50 years, NASA reports. Four American astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft have embarked on a flight as part of the Artemis II program. Approximately eight minutes after launch, the spacecraft entered space, and an hour later it was placed into low Earth orbit. During the first day, the crew, led by Reid Wiseman, will check the life support systems. On the third day, Orion will perform a maneuver to enter the trajectory to the Moon. On the fifth day, the spacecraft will enter the lunar gravity zone, and on the sixth, it will get as close as possible to Earth's satellite and begin the return journey. The total duration of the mission will be about ten days. The launch was previously postponed due to a detected leak – the spacecraft was returned to the assembly shop, causing the March launch window to be missed.
In the future, NASA plans to conduct another test flight, after which astronauts will land on the Moon's surface in 2028. The last time humans visited the Moon was in December 1972.
