Hero of the Soviet Union Alexey Afanasyevich Vasilyev belongs to that legendary cohort of warriors whose courage was decisive in the battles for the freedom of the Fatherland. Alexey Afanasyevich Vasilyev was born on March 17, 1918, in the village of Poruchikovo in the Zainsk district. In 1933, he graduated from seven grades of a rural school, after which he began his working path as a mechanizer and then worked as an accountant for a tractor brigade at the Zainsk Machine and Tractor Station (MTS). In 1939, Vasilyev was drafted into the army. From the first days of the Great Patriotic War, he participated in combat sorties as part of his regiment, delivering bombing strikes against the advancing columns of the enemy. The air gunner has more than 140 combat sorties to his credit. The last sortie of Senior Sergeant Vasilyev took place on May 6, 1945, in the sky over Czechoslovakia. After the Victory, he continued his service in the army. By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated May 15, 1946, for exemplary performance of command assignments in battles against the German-fascist invaders, Alexey Afanasyevich Vasilyev was awarded the Order of Glory of the 1st class, becoming a full cavalier of the Order of Glory. He subsequently remained in military aviation and received an officer's rank. In 1955, Lieutenant Vasilyev was discharged to the reserve. He spent his last years in Odessa, working as an electrician and engaging in patriotic education of the youth.

      Alexey Afanasyevich Vasilyev passed away on May 3, 1980.
