Farakhov has relinquished his mandate as a State Duma deputy.

      The State Duma unanimously voted for the early termination of the powers of deputy Airat Farakhov. He was appointed on April 1 as acting rector of Kazan State Medical University (KSMU), and the university staff was introduced to him by the Minister of Health of the Russian Federation, Mikhail Murashko. "Politics is actions and decisions. The proposal of the head of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Nurgalievich Minnikhanov, to return to Kazan, to return to my alma mater, I perceive as an invitation to serve," Farakhov said at the plenary session. According to him, KSMU is a university with a 200-year history, where four world discoveries took place. "Today, the university has outstanding scientists, talented educators, caring staff, and almost 10,000 students, half of whom are foreign citizens. I gladly accepted this offer. My task is to ensure that scientists, educators, and students are proud to study and work at this university," emphasized the acting rector of KSMU. Farakhov also thanked the voters who "twice sent me to represent their interests in the main parliament of the country." He noted his 10 years of work in the budget and tax committee. "These discussions enriched me, made me strong, and a good specialist," he added. Most likely, Farakhov's mandate will go to member of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation Olga Pavlova, who is next on the list of "United Russia" in Tatarstan. "If Tatarstan and the party decide to transfer the mandate to the next on the list, which is me, then I will gladly and professionally fulfill the duties of a State Duma deputy. I am ready to help and serve the people," Pavlova stated in an interview with "BUSINESS Online." Farakhov was born in Agryz, graduated from KSMU, and is a surgeon by profession. He progressed from the position of a nurse in the Republican Clinical Hospital to the Minister of Health of Tatarstan. In 2013, Farakhov moved to Moscow as Deputy Minister of Health of the Russian Federation, and in 2014, he transitioned to the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation. In 2016, he was elected as a deputy of the State Duma.

      In January 2026, sources from "BUSINESS Online" reported that the main candidate for the position of the new rector of KSMU is Farakhov. The previous rector, Alexey Sozinov, left the post in September 2025, and the acting rector of the university until the end of March this year was Diana Abdulganieva.
