The Government Commission of the Republic of Tatarstan for Road Safety: In Tatarstan, 543 traffic accidents were registered in the first three months of 2026.
In the Republic of Tatarstan, 543 road traffic accidents (RTAs) were registered in the first three months of 2026, resulting in 63 fatalities and 677 injuries. This data was announced today at a meeting of the Government Commission of the Republic of Tatarstan on road safety. The meeting took place at the Government House of RT, chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister of RT – head of the Cabinet of Ministers of RT, and Deputy Chairman of the Government Commission of RT on road safety, Shamil Gafarov. Compared to the same period in 2025, the number of RTAs in the republic decreased by 32 cases (2025 – 575, 2026 - 543), while the number of fatalities increased by 17 people (46 fatalities in the first three months of 2025, 63 in 2026), and injuries decreased by 67 (744 injuries in the first three months of 2025, 677 in 2026). The acting head of the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of RT, Ayrat Samigullin, reported that among the main causes of fatalities in RTAs were head-on collisions, pedestrian accidents, collisions with obstacles, and driving under the influence of alcohol. More than 40% of the deceased were involved in head-on collisions, with 9 people dying in areas where overtaking is prohibited. In January and March 2026, preventive measures "Oncoming Lane" were conducted on the republic's roads, resulting in over two thousand violations of this type ("overtaking is prohibited"). Currently, the "Oncoming Lane" campaign is also taking place from April 15 to 28. Ayrat Samigullin noted that 16% of the deceased were pedestrians (10 people). Of these, 8 out of 10 pedestrians died at night under adverse weather conditions. Some pedestrians died due to negligent behavior regarding traffic rules (being on the roadway without the intention to cross, walking along the roadway). From March to April, a preventive event "Pedestrian" was held in Tatarstan. As a result, twice as many violations were recorded compared to ordinary days (the result was 1,900 violations). A repeat of the "Pedestrian" event is planned for June. The situation on the roads is as follows. On federal roads, while the number of fatalities decreased, the number of RTAs increased. On regional roads, the number of RTAs increased by 3 cases, and the number of fatalities rose by 18 people, totaling 36 fatalities. On local roads, 15 people died during the considered period (an increase of 6 fatalities). On federal highways, a significant increase in all accident indicators was recorded on the M-12 "East" road. The main reason is non-compliance with speed limits. In the local street and road network, an increase in the number of fatalities in RTAs was noted in the cities of Kazan, Naberezhnye Chelny, as well as in the territories of the Elabuga, Zelenodolsk, Nizhnekamsk, Tukayev, and Chistopol districts. The speaker paid special attention to RTAs involving children as passengers. "It is essential to convey to everyone: a child car seat is not a whim of the State Traffic Inspectorate, but a guarantee of the child's life and health safety," said Ayrat Samigullin. The acting head of the traffic police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of RT reported that during the spring break, activities were held to reduce accidents involving children and adolescents. A total of over 1,000 preventive talks were conducted with children and their parents. Almost 500 materials were published in the media. He positively noted the Agryz and Muslyumovo districts, where such work was actively carried out. It was noted that with the onset of the spring-summer period, pit bikes and motorcycles appeared on the roads, including those operated by minors. Each incident of RTAs involving underage drivers will be reported to the Investigative Committee to hold parents (legal representatives) accountable under Article 151.2 of the Criminal Code. Each such incident is expected to be covered in the media.
So far this year, the traffic police have already compiled 168 reports against motorcyclists, of which a third, or 56, are against minors. The Minister of Transport and Road Management of RT, Farit Khaifov, announced proposals aimed at reducing accidents on the roads of the Republic of Tatarstan and reported on the implementation of engineering measures to enhance road safety. Reports were also presented on additional measures aimed at reducing accidents on the roads of the State Company "Russian Automobile Roads," the reasons for the increase in accidents in the Chistopol district, and the activities of the municipal commission on road safety.
