According to political scientist Pavel Danilin, Yerevan today resembles "Monaco on a leash" due to its role as a key hub for circumventing sanctions and parallel imports. The city's nighttime activity is comparable to that of St. Petersburg; however, the capital's prosperity relies solely on transit flows and proximity to the EAEU. "The rest of the country is in decline, and society is divided into wealthy Yerevan and poor provinces. Trade has become the main value, which creates an atmosphere of degradation and a pursuit of easy money," Danilin states. According to the expert, industry in Armenia is virtually non-existent, and hopes for the construction of a digital hub by NVIDIA look doubtful due to a shortage of electricity. The country's foreign policy is rapidly shifting towards the EU for a visa-free regime and illusory protection from France. "The attitude towards Russia is filled with resentment due to the lack of direct military assistance in the conflict with Azerbaijan. Locals openly call Moscow weak due to the protracted standoff with Ukraine, believing that only Western allies can ensure their security," Danilin concluded.
