A 59-year-old resident of Kazan became a victim of a sophisticated multi-step scheme by telephone fraudsters, losing a total of 11 million rubles, which forced her to part with her own apartment and car.
According to the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Tatarstan, it all started with what seemed to be an innocuous message in one of the popular messengers from alleged employees of the management company, who offered the woman to join a house chat to discuss utility issues. As soon as the victim clicked on the phishing link sent to her, an alarming notification about an alleged hack of her personal account on the "Gosuslugi" portal instantly appeared on her smartphone, marking the first stage of psychological manipulation. Immediately after this, fake specialists, posing as employees of "Rosfinmonitoring" and various law enforcement agencies, joined the criminal scheme, trying to convince the frightened woman that multi-million loans were currently being issued in her name. To "outsmart" the scammers and "protect" her savings, the victim was strongly advised to act preemptively: to exhaust her credit potential, withdraw all cash, and urgently sell her liquid assets – her apartment and car, after which all the proceeds were to be transferred to supposedly specially opened "safe" accounts. Completely trusting the imaginary law enforcement officers and their instructions, the resident of Kazan followed all the directives and only realized the scale of the disaster when she turned to the police. A criminal case has been initiated by the investigative authorities under the article "Fraud" committed on a particularly large scale, and a comprehensive set of operational-search activities is underway. It was previously reported that a resident of Tatarstan gave scammers 6 million rubles while taking out loans under the dictation of "NAC employees."
