Card blocking: step-by-step money rescue

Card blocking: step-by-step money rescue

Sudden card blocking causes panic, but it's not a disaster, it's a standard security procedure.

Imagine: you are transferring money to a tutor, a seller from "Avito," or a relative, and the bank suddenly blocks the transaction. The card is "frozen," and the funds are in limbo. Familiar situation? According to statistics from the Bank of Russia, in 2025, criminals stole about 29 billion rubles from citizens. This is a 6% increase compared to the previous year. In response, the regulator expanded the list of "red flags" for suspicious transactions from 6 to 12 items. Now, credit organizations are required to scan each transfer against the expanded list. The result was immediate: cases of card blocking during money transfers increased significantly.

"In the first weeks of January 2026, banks suspended operations on several million cards and accounts of individuals. However, the number of complaints to the Central Bank turned out to be half of the usual amount," comments Dmitry Model, an expert from the "Myfinances.rf" project. "This proves that most blocks are short-term. The system automatically lifts restrictions after a quick check. It's better to confirm the transfer once than to spend six months trying to recover stolen funds through the police."

So what should you do if the unfortunate notification has already arrived in a text message? Below is a clear action algorithm.

Step 1. Stay calm and don't give in to emotions.

The most common mistake is panic. A person starts calling support, leaving angry posts on social media, or, worse, looking for "helpers" online. Remember the main thing: your money has not gone anywhere. The funds have not been withdrawn, seized by bailiffs, or transferred to fraudsters. The bank has simply put the transaction on a temporary pause. The purpose of this block is to break the automatic chain of actions if you were being controlled by a criminal. Treat the block as a protective mechanism: a security guard at the entrance to the bank stopped you for a document check. It's unpleasant, but safe.

Step 2. Initiate a call to the bank yourself (key point).

This is a critically important rule: never wait for a call from the bank. Fraudsters actively exploit the fact of blocking. The scheme is simple: while you are nervous, a "security service employee" calls you and asks you to dictate the code from the SMS to "lift the block." As a result, you lose all your savings.

      Correct actions:

      - Take your physical card.

      - Look at its back. There is a hotline number printed there (for example, 900 for Sberbank, 1000 for Alfa-Bank, etc.).

      - Call only this number or write in the official support chat within the mobile app.

      - Ask a precise question: "Why is the transfer and card blocked? What are the criteria for suspicion in my case?"

Helpful tip: if the block is not lifted within 2-3 hours after your inquiry, demand that the operator provide a written reason for the refusal to conduct the operation via email. The law requires the bank to justify the refusal to conduct an operation under Federal Law No. 161-FZ.

Step 3. Form a "dossier of evidence" for the legality of the transfer.

The bank is not a psychic. It only sees numbers and amounts. To convince the system that you are not a victim of phone fraudsters, but a conscious payer, provide documents.

      What can serve as evidence:

      - A sales contract (even handwritten on the knee — it has legal force).

      - A receipt or sales slip (photo or scan).

      - Screenshots of correspondence with a recruiter, seller on the marketplace, or tutor (they should show agreements on the amount).

      - A training certificate or receipt from a medical institution.

      Where to send:

Take quality photos or scans. Open the support chat in the app or web version of the bank. Attach the files and be sure to write a short accompanying explanation: "Transferring funds for the purchase of a sofa under contract No... dated..." or "Payment for my son's driving school according to the offer agreement."

The transparency of your actions will speed up the verification process significantly. The financial monitoring employee will see that the client is reasonable and willing to cooperate, and will manually lift the block without waiting for the automatic timer.

Step 4. Repeat the transaction after receiving official permission.

When the bank is convinced that the operation is indeed yours and not dictated by a fraudster on the line, the card status will change from "blocked" to "active." Usually, the system automatically offers to complete the interrupted operation.

      Your final algorithm:

      - Wait for a push notification or SMS with the text "Block lifted."

      - Re-enter the app and try the transfer again.

      - If the transfer is large (for example, buying a car or the first installment for an apartment), call the bank in advance and warn them about the transfer — ask to add the recipient to the "white list" for 24 hours.

Important: when you can't do without a lawyer.

The above algorithm works in 95% of cases of everyday blocks (transfers to friends, payment for services, transfers between your accounts). However, there are situations when the card is completely blocked (the account is frozen under 115-FZ) or the bank unilaterally terminates the contract.

You urgently need a lawyer if:

      - The block lasts more than 5 working days, and the bank refers to "internal verification" without deadlines.

      - You received a letter of intent to terminate the banking service contract.

      - Large sums are "hanging" on the card that you need right now (for example, for an operation or transaction).

In such situations, do not waste time corresponding with robots. Write a complaint to the online reception of the Bank of Russia and simultaneously contact a financial lawyer. Delaying verification under 115-FZ may threaten the blocking of all accounts, including credit and foreign currency accounts.

Remember: a temporary suspension of the operation is not an enemy, but your personal shield against financial losses. One confirmed transfer is better than six months of going through police and prosecutor's offices to recover stolen funds.
