Chess player Garry Kasparov has been placed on an international wanted list for justifying terrorism.

      The world chess champion Garry Kasparov has been placed on an international wanted list. This was reported by RIA "Novosti" citing court documents. Kasparov was declared wanted on December 1, 2025, as indicated in the documents. The reason was suspicions of justifying terrorism and evading the duties of a foreign agent. The chess player was charged in absentia on October 23, 2025, for crimes under part 2 of article 205.2 ("Public calls for terrorist activities," "Public justification of terrorism or propaganda of terrorism using mass media or the internet"), part 2 of article 330.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Evasion of duties of foreign agents"). It should be noted that world chess champion Kasparov was included in the list of terrorists and extremists on March 6, 2024. In June, Bloomberg reported, citing sources, that Kasparov may be involved in a case regarding an attempt to overthrow the government in South Sudan. It is alleged that the chess player introduced Harvard scholar Peter Adjak to co-founder of Jane Street Robert Granieri. The former was accused in 2024 of conspiracy to lead the East African state. Granieri provided Adjak with $7 million in funding to purchase weapons intended for carrying out a coup.
