Storm warning in Tatarstan for May 30-31, 2026: thunderstorm, strong winds, fog, and hail

      Consultation – warning about the intensity of meteorological phenomena from 12:00 on May 30 to 18:00 on May 31, 2026.

      During the day and evening of May 30, 2026, thunderstorms and strong winds with gusts of 15-18 m/s are expected in the Republic of Tatarstan and in Kazan. On May 31, 2026, the following is expected in the Republic of Tatarstan and in Kazan:

      - fog at night and in the morning;

      - thunderstorms, heavy rain, strong winds with gusts of 15-18 m/s during the day, and possible hail. The Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia for the Republic of Tatarstan informs:

      In case of increasing winds:

      1. It is recommended to limit going outside, stay indoors. It is important not to leave children unattended.

      2. If strong winds catch you outside, it is recommended to take shelter in underground passages or building entrances. Do not hide from strong winds near building walls, as slate and other roofing materials may fall from the roofs. This also applies to public transport stops and unfinished buildings.

      3. Stay away from advertising boards, signs, traffic signs, and power lines while outside.

      4. Do not stay near large trees, and do not park vehicles near them – broken branches blown by the wind can pose a significant danger.

      5. It is deadly dangerous to stand under power lines and approach downed power lines during strong winds.

      6. Broken glass falling from upper floors, as well as roofing elements and decorative plaster blown off by the wind, can pose a danger. This threat increases near buildings under construction or renovation.

      7. All windows in houses must be tightly closed, and items that may fall outside should be removed from balconies and loggias.

      8. Stay as far away from windows in residential or work premises as possible.

      If possible, refrain from long-distance travel.

      Pedestrians are advised to cross the street only at designated pedestrian crossings. Do not run across the road in front of moving vehicles, as the braking distance of a car significantly increases due to slippery road surfaces. Move only against the flow of traffic. Use a high-visibility vest or attach reflective elements to your clothing.

      To drivers:

      1. When driving under these conditions, refrain from unnecessary lane changes, overtaking, and passing;

      2. Pay attention to the technical condition of the vehicle, especially the braking system and tire condition;

      3. Avoid sudden braking; if you need to stop, reduce speed smoothly;

      4. Press the brake pedal several times to signal drivers of vehicles behind you;

      5. All lights must be in working order;

      6. Drive at a speed that ensures safety in busy traffic areas, near schools, at intersections and bridges, as well as on turns and descents.

      Pedestrians are advised:

      1. Be extremely careful when crossing streets and roads;

      2. Cross the street only at designated pedestrian crossings, remembering that due to insufficient visibility and slippery road surfaces, drivers require more time to stop their vehicles;

      3. Use, if possible, only overground or underground pedestrian crossings to cross the roadway;

      4. Do not run across the road in front of moving vehicles;

      5. Move only against the flow of traffic;

      6. Use a high-visibility vest or attach reflective elements to your clothing.

      In case of hail:

      If you are in a vehicle, stay away from the windows, preferably turn your back to them (facing the center of the cabin) and cover your eyes with your hands or clothing.

      If you have small children with you, cover them with your body and also shield their eyes with clothing or your hand. It is best to lie on the floor (if space allows).

      If you are driving, stop moving. However, first look around (if visibility allows) to see if there is suitable shelter nearby (bridges, overpasses, garages, covered parking).

      If there is no suitable shelter nearby, make sure you are not in the middle of the roadway, and if possible, move closer to its edge. However, be aware that pulling off to the shoulder (especially in a low area) is dangerous, as it may be washed away during heavy rainfall and possible flooding.

      Also, do not drive into areas where hail accumulates, as your vehicle may lose control.

      Under no circumstances leave the vehicle during hail! Remember that the average duration of hail is about 6 minutes, and it rarely lasts longer than 15 minutes.

      If hail catches you indoors, stay as far away from windows as possible and do not leave the house. Do not use electrical appliances, as hail is usually accompanied by thunderstorms.

      If hail catches you outside, try to find shelter. Otherwise, protect your head from hail impacts. Do not go into low areas that can fill with water in minutes and turn into a swift current, or into areas with the highest accumulation of hail, where the layer is clearly thicker than around. Do not try to find shelter under trees, as there is a high risk of being struck by lightning, and large hailstones can break tree branches, which can cause you additional injuries.
