Flu and ARVI in the summer period
It is commonly believed that acute respiratory viral infections (ARVI) and influenza are exclusively winter diseases. However, the risk of infection exists year-round, including during the summer months. Warm weather often lowers our vigilance, creating additional risks.
Reasons for summer illness. These include the use of air conditioners and drafts (a sharp transition from heat to a cooled room weakens local immunity), mass gatherings of people (festivals, travel, transportation), decreased alertness to symptoms in warm weather, and weakened immunity after winter.
The danger of influenza in summer. Although it occurs less frequently than in winter, it can be more severe due to the fact that in the heat, symptoms (high fever, dehydration, weakness) are harder to tolerate. The risk of complications also increases: bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, otitis, exacerbation of chronic diseases, myocarditis, neuritis, bacterial infections.
What to do with symptoms in summer. At the first signs of ARVI or influenza, it is necessary to stay home, ensure rest, drink plenty of fluids, and limit contacts. You should see a doctor if a high fever lasts more than 3 days or if you experience difficulty breathing, chest pain, rash, or severe weakness. Self-medication is unacceptable — antibiotics are ineffective against viral infections.
Preventive measures: dress according to the weather, avoid hypothermia even in heat; do not abuse the use of air conditioners — the indoor temperature should not be more than 5–7 degrees lower than the outdoor temperature; ventilate rooms; support immunity through a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and physical activity; avoid crowded places at the first signs of illness; consider vaccination before traveling to regions with active virus circulation.
Decreased vigilance: In summer, people often neglect basic hygiene rules:
- Insufficiently thorough or infrequent hand washing.
- Non-compliance with respiratory etiquette (coughing and sneezing not into a tissue or elbow).
- Visiting public places when experiencing symptoms of illness.
Conclusion: Summer is not the time to forget about respiratory infections. Influenza, although less active, still poses a danger, and various ARVI continue to circulate. Prevention is the main defense. Adhering to hygiene, reasonable use of air conditioners, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and, most importantly, timely autumn vaccination against influenza are the keys to having an active and illness-free summer.
