On the way to the title, Fatykhov demonstrated outstanding skill. After eleven rounds of the tournament, he suffered only one defeat, achieving nine victories and missing one game. The competitions were held under the Swiss system with up to two losses, where each round was of utmost importance. The historic tournament gathered about 150 participants from 17 countries around the world. The competition for the title of the strongest took place in the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi, from May 29 to June 2.
