In Tatarstan, juvenile crime has decreased by almost 40 percent; however, schoolchildren and vocational students still commit the majority of offenses.
Since the beginning of 2026, law enforcement agencies in the Republic of Tatarstan have recorded a significant decrease in the level of crime among minors, which has allowed for significantly fewer criminal cases to be investigated compared to the same period last year. As reported on Wednesday at a press conference by the deputy head of the department, head of the organization of activities of juvenile affairs units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tatarstan, Rezeda Vakhitova, 235 crimes committed by minors or with their direct participation were investigated in the region in the first five months of the current year. For comparison, in January-May 2025, this figure was 384 crimes, meaning a decrease of almost 150 incidents. Vakhitova also provided a social portrait of the average young lawbreaker. Among the total number of juvenile offenders who came under investigation, the overwhelming majority were schoolchildren from general education institutions – there were 86 of them. In second place in terms of criminal activity were students from secondary vocational educational institutions, namely technical schools and colleges, with 66 individuals. Much less frequently, but still appearing in crime reports, are students from higher educational institutions, although their share is small, totaling only three individuals during the reporting period. The internal affairs agencies attribute the positive dynamics to the strengthening of preventive work in educational institutions. As previously reported, over the past five years, the number of youth in Tatarstan has decreased.
