"Pedagogy of Savings": How a Tight Monetary Policy Shaped a Culture of Conscious Accumulation
The cycle of high interest rates has not only changed the yields on deposits but has also formed a new behavioral model among Russians — a culture of conscious saving. This was stated in an interview with "Ъ FM" at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum by VTB board member Dmitry Breitenbikher, comparing the influence of the market environment to pedagogical principles. "If we recall Leo Tolstoy's principles that true learning occurs not through coercion but through creating an environment where correct behavior becomes natural and beneficial, we can say that it is indeed the cycle of high rates that has formed the culture of conscious accumulation," he noted. According to the top manager's observations, people have started to approach the management of temporarily free funds much more thoughtfully, and this trend continues even with the reversal of the monetary cycle towards lower rates. According to the bank's forecasts, the volume of attracted funds from the population in Russian banks by the end of the year will increase by 10% and exceed 72 trillion rubles. VTB itself intends to grow its portfolio faster than the market, particularly due to several million clients from Post Bank who have recently transitioned to VTB. However, more important than quantitative indicators is the structural shift: there is a growing interest among clients not only in classic deposits but also in more complex instruments — bond strategies and money market funds. The bank is responding to this trend by enhancing personalized selection technologies. Thus, the habit of conscious saving, nurtured by the "pedagogy" of high rates, is, in the banker’s opinion, of a long-term nature and compels financial institutions to restructure their product lines towards more personalized and flexible investment solutions.
