      Market paradox

      After a shortage and record price increases in 2023-2024, producers sharply increased output. The result is overproduction. According to Forbes, the profitability of poultry farms fell almost sixfold: from 33.17% to 5.68%. Egg prices in July 2025 decreased by 37.1% year-on-year. By May 2026, the price of a dozen eggs in Tatarstan dropped from 95.8 to 88.4 rubles.

      Against the backdrop of falling incomes, the Russian Poultry Union proposed establishing a price range for category C1 eggs — for both procurement and retail prices. Producers complain about pressure from retailers who demand price reductions below cost.

      Economists' opinion

      Former Deputy Minister of Agriculture Leonid Kholod called the idea harmful: "We have a market economy." Professor Igor Kakh from KFU added: regulating egg prices without excise taxes will lead to shortages and gray schemes. The Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation is currently studying the balance of interests.
