The legacy of Mirza Mahmutov was discussed in the RII in the year of the centenary of his birth.
A round table was held at the Russian Islamic Institute dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding educator and public figure Mirza Makmutov. Participants in the discussion included teachers and specialists in the fields of pedagogy and linguistics, representatives of scientific communities, and leading staff from specialized universities. During the event, the significance of the academic's legacy for modern teaching methods and ways to adapt it in the educational programs of Islamic educational institutions were discussed. In his welcoming speech, the Vice-Rector for Education of the Bulgarian Islamic Academy, Rustem Gilmutdinov, noted the key idea of the meeting—the integration of Mirza Makmutov's problem-based learning into the system of Muslim education. According to him, in the information age, students are required not just to mechanically memorize texts, but to be able to comprehend, argue, and apply religious knowledge in modern life circumstances. In this context, he emphasized the necessity of combining classical Muslim methodology with modern didactic techniques. "The information age demands from students of Islamic educational institutions not just mechanical memorization of texts, but conscious comprehension and the ability to apply the values of Islam in a rapidly changing world. Instead of passively transmitting ready-made fatwas and dogmas, the teacher creates a problematic situation, confronting students with real intellectual contradictions, leading them to independently seek solutions based on the principles of Sharia. This forms not just a clergyman, but a scholar-intellectual capable of engaging in dialogue with various representatives of society," summarized Rustem Gilmutdinov. During the round table, key milestones in Mirza Makmutov's biography were noted: his front-line past, professional development at the Military Institute of Foreign Languages, a long tenure as the Minister of Education of the TASSR, and his contribution to the founding and establishment of the Russian Islamic Institute, where he created the Department of Philology and Area Studies. Participants discussed how his theory of problem-based learning remains relevant and applicable in teaching Arabic and Tatar languages, as well as other humanities disciplines. Reference: Mirza Ismailovich Makmutov (1926–2008) was a Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Honored Scientist of the RSFSR, Academician of the Russian Academy of Education and the New York Academy of Sciences. He was the creator and first head of the Department of Philology and Area Studies at the Russian Islamic Institute; one of the key developers of the theory of problem-based learning in the USSR.
