Fire safety on the road: how to protect yourself and your car from fire
Fire safety on the road is not just a formality, but a vital set of measures that allows for the prevention of vehicle fires and the preservation of the health of drivers and passengers. Every year, thousands of vehicle fires are recorded in Russia, and most of them could have been avoided by following basic rules.
Main causes of vehicle fires:
Most often, flames ignite due to malfunctions in the fuel system or wiring. Short circuits, overloads in the electrical network, insulation breaches in wires, fuel or oil leaks – all of these are sparks that can lead to tragedy. Fires often occur due to violations of safety requirements during refueling or storage of flammable materials.
How to ensure fire safety in a car: main measures
Regular technical inspections. Check the condition of the fuel system, wiring, and the tightness of all connections at least once every six months. Any fuel or oil leak is a signal for immediate repair.
Mandatory fire extinguisher. It must be functional, easily accessible, and designed for extinguishing solid combustible materials and liquids (fire classes A and B). Remember that powder extinguishers can compact over time – they need to be shaken during each scheduled inspection.
Proper electrical work. Do not install additional devices (alarms, remote start, radios) on your own if you lack qualifications. Trust the work only to professional auto electricians. Monitor the insulation of wires – even a small damage can cause a short circuit.
What is strictly prohibited:
- charging the battery directly in the car without removing the terminals;
- using an open flame or blowtorch to warm up the engine in winter;
- leaving plugged-in cabin or engine heaters unattended;
- attempting to repair gas or fuel equipment on your own, especially if you do not have the appropriate clearance.
Also, do not store flammable liquids (gasoline, solvents, aerosols) in the cabin or trunk – they can explode even from slight heating in the sun.
What to do if your car catches fire: step-by-step instructions
- Immediately stop, turn off the engine, and set the car to manual brake. Block the wheels with chocks if available.
- Quickly exit the vehicle yourself and help passengers, especially children and the elderly, to leave the cabin.
- If there are injured persons, take them to a safe distance – at least 15-20 meters from the burning car.
- Try to extinguish the flames with a fire extinguisher, directing the stream at the base of the fire, not at the flames themselves. Do not fully open the hood – first create a gap and let the powder inside, otherwise the influx of oxygen will intensify the fire.
- Set up a warning triangle or turn on the hazard lights to alert other drivers.
- If you cannot control the fire within a minute, move to a safe distance and call emergency services at 112. Do not risk your life for a car – it is not worth it.
Remember: a fire on the road develops rapidly. Within 3-5 minutes, the cabin can be completely engulfed in flames, and toxic smoke is deadly. Your main task is to save yourself and those around you. Following simple preventive measures can minimize the risk of ignition, and clear actions in case of fire can preserve what matters most: life.
