The herpetologist named the main mistake in providing assistance after a snake bite.
Applying a tourniquet after a snake bite is one of the most dangerous mistakes in first aid. This was stated by Doctor of Biological Sciences, herpetologist Vladimir Cherlin in an interview with "Radio 1". According to the specialist, this method has long been recognized as ineffective and can only worsen the condition of the victim. "You must categorically not apply a tourniquet. Some guides still say that a tourniquet should be applied. This is old data that was rewritten back in the thirties and forties. It is now completely clear: a tourniquet only causes harm," the expert emphasized. Cherlin also noted that the common belief in the effectiveness of sucking out the venom with the mouth is not true. Instead, he said, after a bite, it is necessary to take measures to remove blood from the wound as quickly as possible and then seek medical help. Additionally, the herpetologist recommended taking an antihistamine, limiting movement of the bitten limb, and avoiding panic. "If there is strong stress, poisoning occurs more severely. The task of those nearby is to prevent the person from panicking. The bitten limb should not move too much. And as quickly as possible to a doctor," he noted.
The expert added that a viper bite poses a danger, but timely medical assistance can prevent severe consequences.
