      The beef tapeworm (synonym - unarmed tapeworm) - Taeniarhynchus saginatus - is a helminth belonging to the phylum Platyhelminthes, class Cestoda, the causative agent of taeniasis.

      Taeniasis is a helminthiasis caused by the parasitism of the adult stage of the beef tapeworm (cestode) in the human small intestine, manifesting as a disturbance in gastrointestinal function.

      In Russia, the long-term dynamics of taeniasis incidence show a pronounced trend towards decline. Exceeding the average Russian incidence rate is noted in regions with widespread pasture and grazing livestock. Endemic areas include the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Nenets Autonomous Okrug, and the republics of Karachay-Cherkessia, Chechnya, Kabardino-Balkaria, Komi, and Kalmykia.

      Taeniasis is more common in regions with a culture of preparing traditional national dishes without sufficient thermal processing (such as stroganina, blood kebabs, basturma, etc.).

      The eggs of the beef tapeworm are resistant in the external environment and retain their infectivity for a long time: in grass - over 150 days, in water - over 30 days.

      Infection of humans with taeniasis occurs through the consumption of beef containing larvae of the beef tapeworm that have not undergone thermal processing.

      In the human body, the beef tapeworm can parasitize for up to 20 years.

      In most cases, taeniasis is asymptomatic. Occasionally, moderate dyspeptic phenomena may be observed (increased salivation, bloating, heartburn, unpleasant taste in the mouth, feeling of abdominal distension, cravings or aversions to certain types of food, bulimia, rapid satiety, abdominal pain), asthenoneurotic symptoms (dizziness, headache, sleep disturbances, fainting, convulsive states). In some patients, taeniasis manifests only with subjective sensations of segments of the helminth passing from the anus (patients report that this resembles involuntary defecation).

      Complications of taeniasis are rare and include appendicitis, inflammation of the bile ducts, intestinal perforation, and intestinal obstruction.

      In the absence of complications, patients are treated with antihelminthic drugs. The prognosis for taeniasis is usually favorable.

      Preventive measures regarding taeniasis are carried out comprehensively by medical staff and veterinary specialists. Prevention is aimed at preventing infection in animals, preventing infection in humans, and actively identifying and treating infected individuals. Sanitary measures include improving the living conditions of settlements, peasant and farm households, and providing toilets, including in field stations and pens. Water sources for livestock should be allocated that are not contaminated with untreated wastewater. Individuals from high-risk groups (agricultural workers) are systematically examined for helminth infestation and undergo deworming. Prevention of human infection is carried out through veterinary and sanitary inspection of meat.

      The main individual preventive measures are:

      - exclusion of raw and insufficiently thermally processed beef from the diet;

      - purchasing meat only from authorized trade locations.
