In Russia, training programs for right-hand drive cars may be introduced.
Driver training programs for right-hand drive cars may be introduced in driving schools in Russia. This is reported by TASS, citing a document approved by the federal government. Authorities are studying the feasibility of such an innovation. The report should be presented to the Russian government in 2027 by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the Ministry of Industry and Trade. According to Alexander Timofeev, an associate professor at the Department of Computer Science at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, right-hand drive cars are most popular in the Far East. In Kamchatka, Sakhalin, and the Magadan region, their share exceeds 70%. "With such a high share of right-hand drive cars in the region, there is certainly a need to undergo driving practice for complex driving conditions. It is recommended to install periscope mirrors or an overtaking camera system on the car. For right-hand drive cars, it is advisable to maintain an increased distance from the car in front (1.5-2 times) to have a better field of view. There is also a problem with the headlight settings, which simply blind oncoming traffic," Timofeev said. The scientist also noted that the share of right-hand drive cars in the entire vehicle fleet in Russia is about 8%, and from the secondary market — 12.2 percent. At the same time, statistics on road traffic accidents involving "right-hand drive" cars indicate their growth proportional to the number of cars imported into the country. Authorities are considering this innovation, as Timofeev believes, due to transportation risks: right-hand drive cars are involved in accidents 2.4 times more than left-hand drive cars, and most often these are severe head-on collisions during overtaking, as the driver of a right-hand drive car "cannot see" the vehicle.
The expert notes that this innovation will be relevant strictly at the regional level, as in Moscow and throughout central Russia, the share of right-hand drive cars is less than 1%.
