In the first half of 2026, Kazan was visited by about 3 million guests, which is 6% more than the figures for the same period in 2025. The total contribution of the hospitality industry to the economy of the capital of Tatarstan over six months reached 50 billion rubles. Today, Kazan holds the lead among Russian cities in the ratio of tourists to the population: for 1.33 million residents, there are more than 5 million guests annually. According to the Tourism Development Committee, the average tourist in Kazan is 40 years old, with women making up 58% of guests and men 42%. A significant portion of travelers prefers family vacations: about a third of visitors (33%) arrive in the city with children. Most often, tourists come to Kazan from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Cheboksary, and Yoshkar-Ola. The high popularity creates a serious burden on the urban infrastructure, which operates at its limits during peak periods. The main problem in the industry is pronounced seasonality. As noted by Alexander Shavliashvili, the peak demand occurs in the summer. For example, in June, Kazan was visited by more than 613,000 people, while in winter, the occupancy of accommodation facilities decreases by almost half. Even despite the success of the New Year holidays, when the city welcomed over 480,000 tourists, the gap in figures between seasons remains significant. "Our task is to increase the length of stay of tourists in the city, stimulate winter tourist flow, and improve the tools for its assessment," emphasized Kazan Mayor Ilsur Metshin. To achieve the set goals, the Tourism Development Committee has identified key vectors of work. The main one is to increase the average length of trips from two to three days. Today, the most popular locations among the city's guests remain the Kazan Kremlin, Old Tatar Sloboda, Kremlin Embankment, the Family Center "Kazan," and Baumana Street. To keep tourists in the region longer, it is planned to actively offer routes to the attractions of Tatarstan that go beyond the capital. For systematic growth in tourist flow, it is proposed to focus on the development of year-round points of attraction. Alexander Shavliashvili suggested creating a large ice rink around the Family Center "Kazan." Additionally, after the reconstruction of the first phase of the Kazan Zoo-Botanical Garden, its attendance is expected to rise to 2 million per year, according to the director of the tourism development committee. An important task remains attracting foreign guests, whose share currently accounts for 2% of the total flow. The plan is to increase this figure by 4.3%. Alexander Shavliashvili notes that for successful competition in the international market, it is necessary to rebrand Kazan, clearly defining the "key meanings" of the city, and enrich the tourist program with a "fourth day." "A trip from abroad is almost never planned for two days. Foreign tourists generally consider a trip lasting at least four days," he noted. City head Ilsur Metshin called on relevant structures to actively seek new solutions and make the most efficient use of the existing potential. "The Zoo-Botanical Garden is absolutely the right direction: with proper positioning, it can become a powerful point of attraction. But it's not just about it: we have a lot of opportunities that need to be combined and directed in the right direction," said the city head. The mayor supported the practice of conducting "brainstorming" sessions with participants in the tourism market, emphasizing that the growth in Kazan's popularity is a natural result of systematic work. According to Alexander Shavliashvili, this course must be continued: the combination of quality infrastructure, hosting major international events, and actively promoting the brand will allow Kazan not only to increase volumes but also to improve the quality of the tourist product.
