      The Muslyumovsky district seems to confidently claim the title of the most hemp-rich district in Tatarstan. At the end of last year, a factory for processing technical hemp was launched here. The construction and launch of the factory cost a total of about 140 million rubles. In the next issue of our column "Business in the Countryside," we discuss how hemp production operates.

      Hemp is the most underrated crop, considering how quickly it grows—just three months—and how waste-free it can be utilized. Thinking this way, the Muslyumovsky district ignited the idea of focusing on processing non-narcotic hemp. A unique enterprise was launched by the subsidiary company "Chelny-Khleba" LLC "Agrofirma 'Rodnye Kraya - Tugан Yak'." Over 1,000 hectares of land were planted with hemp in the district. After harvesting, processing began. The factory produces 2 tons of hemp raw material per day. The fiber is briquetted and sent to storage—awaiting an order. The factory plans to sell the finished raw material to China, where clothing, marine ropes, and cables are made from hemp.

      The factory has engaged local farmers in the business. They are provided with hemp seeds, their lands are studied, and clear instructions are given on how to grow the technical crop for maximum profit. From one field, hemp can yield profit twice: in the fall, the "tops"—hemp seeds, and in the spring, the "roots"—the remaining part of the plant, which can reach a height of 3 meters. Harvesting hemp is extremely difficult: the fibers get tangled in the combine harvester's header, and without the driver's skill, it can quickly disable the equipment.

      Have there been raids on the hemp plantations? Yes, shares Raile Ziganjirov, the head of the agrofirma, mostly out of curiosity. However, the psychoactive substance—tetrahydrocannabinol—usually contains up to 0.1% THC in technical hemp. For comparison, in narcotic hemp, this can be up to 15% THC. So, the only thing that connects it to its cannabinoid brother is its appearance. This was not missed by Tatarstan bloggers, presenting Muslyumovo as the perfect location for an unusual hemp photo session.

      What is hemp raw material used for? It is used in the textile, pulp, construction, and automotive industries, and from the waste, fillers for animals can be made, both for farms and for pets. By the way, in pre-revolutionary Russia, revenues from the export of hemp fiber ranked second in the empire's treasury. Under Peter I, Russia became the world's leading exporter of hemp fiber. In the USSR, in 1936, hemp crops occupied 680,000 hectares—this is 4/5 of the world's area under this crop.

      And what about defense? Yes, hemp is seriously considered as a raw material for making gunpowder. Russian scientists created gunpowder from flax and hemp back in 2015. Similar projects for processing this raw material have been announced in Tatarstan by "Tatneft" and other companies.
