Saudi Arabia is forced to transport oil through the Suez Canal due to threats from Yemeni Houthis in the Red Sea. This route creates difficulties for large tankers that cannot pass through the canal fully loaded. According to The Wall Street Journal, this week at least four tankers carrying Saudi oil turned around before the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait and headed towards Suez. According to the analytics company Vortexa, in the first three weeks of July, oil transit through the Suez Canal reached its highest volume in 2.5 years, while supplies through the Sumed pipeline increased by 50% compared to the previous month.
Due to the limited capacity of the canal, very large tankers (VLCC) are forced to unload about half of their cargo in the Gulf of Suez, after which the oil is pumped through the Sumed pipeline across Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea. For Asian buyers, this route can increase delivery times by 20–30 days, notes WSJ.
