A rare species of bats has been discovered by scientists at Kazan Federal University.

      Brown long-eared bat individuals had not been reliably registered in Tatarstan for 26 years. Scientists from Kazan Federal University, during research work at the educational and scientific base "Sviyazhsk," caught two brown long-eared bats (Lat. Plecotus auritus), which are listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Tatarstan. The research involved employees from the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology. The group was led by Professor Vadim Saitov from the Department of Zoology and General Biology. It also included an associate professor from the same department, Nikolai Shulaev, and a laboratory assistant, Lyubov Androsyuk. Scientific activities were conducted in collaboration with the Volga-Kama Nature Reserve, represented by senior researcher and chief specialist on bats Maxim Egorov, and Penza State University, represented by master's student Maria Malyavina. The bats were captured using mist nets and special ultrasonic generators, followed by identification, measurement of morphometric parameters, and collection of parasites – ticks and fleas. After that, the animals were successfully released. "As a result of the research, two specimens of the species listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Tatarstan were caught – the brown long-eared bat, which had not been reliably registered in the region for 26 years," said N. Shulaev. In addition to the brown long-eared bat, other red-listed bats were registered, such as the water bat, Brandt's bat, the red evening bat, and the forest bat. Interest in bats, according to the specialist, increased during the Covid-19 pandemic.
