Russian Alexandrov defeated the world number one at the tournament in Toronto.
Russian tennis player Ekaterina Alexandrova, ranked 19th in the world, unexpectedly defeated the world number one – Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka – in the round of 16 at the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto, Canada. The match lasted 2 hours and 29 minutes, with the 29-year-old native of Chelyabinsk winning against the representative of Belarus in three sets with a score of 7:6 (7:3), 4:6, 6:4. "I just tried to play each point as if it were the last. In matches against her (Sabalenka – ed.), you don't have many opportunities. I had enough today, but I couldn't convert them all," the publication "Championat" quotes Alexandrova's words from the post-match interview. In the quarterfinals, the Russian will face Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina (9th in the WTA rankings), who defeated American Amanda Anisimova (10th in the WTA rankings) in two sets with a score of 6:2, 6:4.
The WTA 1000 tournament is taking place in Toronto from August 2 to 13. Last year, the competition was held in another Canadian city – Montreal, and its winner was Canadian tennis player Victoria Mboko.
