Meteorologists themselves are stunned: we are expecting an anomalous Indian summer in 2026.
September this year promises to be unusual. The warm and dry weather that we have come to call Indian summer will not fit into the usual two weeks. According to meteorologists' forecasts, in different regions of Russia, it will return several times, and in some places, it will linger almost until October. Let's figure out what to expect from the first month of autumn and why this Indian summer may turn out to be different from what we are used to.
Moscow and the Moscow Region: not one wave, but three
Forecasters predict that the classic prolonged Indian summer will not occur in the capital region. Instead of one long period of sunny weather, two to three heat waves are expected, which will be followed by rain and cooling. According to meteorologist Tatyana Pozdnyakova, we should expect short-term returns of summer rather than a stable sunny period. At the same time, leading specialist at the Phobos center, Yevgeny Tishkovets, gives a more optimistic forecast: September in Moscow and the Moscow region is expected to be warm and dry, with temperatures about two degrees above the climatic norm, and precipitation will be 20-40% less than usual. The first serious cooling will be felt by Muscovites in mid-August — the temperature will drop to +17 °C. But already in September, warmth will return, and residents of the capital will be able to enjoy sunny days.
St. Petersburg: warmth will be there, but short-lived
In the Northwest, autumn arrives earlier. The proximity of the Baltic Sea and frequent cyclones make the weather in St. Petersburg less predictable. Indian summer is expected here in September, but stable warmth may last only a few days. On the warmest days, the air temperature will rise to +15…+18 °C, but high humidity and prolonged rains may shorten the comfortable period to a minimum.
Southern Russia: summer doesn't give up until October
The southern regions part with summer warmth later than all. Here, Indian summer will begin at the end of September and may last until early October. During the day, temperatures will reach +22…+28 °C. The warm Black Sea and proximity to the subtropics can extend the transitional season, and there will still be opportunities for swimming along the coast.
Ural and Volga Region: fluctuations and contrasts
In the Volga region and the Urals, Indian summer is preliminarily expected in the middle and second half of September. After a prolonged summer drought, the transition to autumn may be accompanied by sharp weather fluctuations. On warm days, temperatures can rise to +18…+22 °C, but the duration of such periods will depend on the activity of cyclones coming from the west.
Siberia: short but bright
Siberian Indian summer traditionally arrives earlier than in the European part of the country. The first periods of autumn warmth here are possible as early as the beginning or middle of September and usually last from five to ten days. In 2026, it may be shorter due to the early arrival of cold air from the north. Even during the daytime warming, nighttime frosts are possible in the region.
Far East: Indian summer in October
In the Far East, Indian summer usually begins only in early October. In 2026, due to the influence of monsoons and increased humidity, stable warming may shift closer to the middle of the month. Under favorable conditions, warm weather lasts one to two weeks. However, due to frequent rains, in some years, Indian summer in the region passes almost unnoticed.
What is Indian summer from a meteorological perspective
Indian summer is called the period of warm, dry, and sunny weather that occurs after the first noticeable autumn cooling. It is the return of warmth after coolness that distinguishes this phenomenon from ordinary warm days. From a meteorological standpoint, it is associated with the establishment of a stable anticyclone. The sky clears, the wind weakens, daytime temperatures can reach +18…+25 °C, while at night it becomes significantly colder, and frosts are possible. According to the folk calendar, the beginning of Indian summer is traditionally associated with September 14, and its end — with September 21 or 27. Sometimes a separate young Indian summer is highlighted, which falls at the end of August and the beginning of September.
What’s the conclusion
September 2026 promises to be different: in some places, warmth will return several times, in others, it will linger for a long time, and in some areas, it will be almost absent. The Moscow region awaits several waves of sunny weather, St. Petersburg — a short but pleasant warming, the south — almost October summer, while Siberia and the Far East will have their local surprises, writes URA.RU.
The main thing is to remember: Indian summer does not come every year. If one cyclone with rain replaces another, a stable period of dry and warm weather may not occur at all. But in 2026, the chances for a warm September are high — and this is a good reason not to hide the umbrella too far away.
