Scientists from the Institute of Geology and Oil and Gas Technologies of KFU, together with specialists from TatNIPIneft, studied ancient rocks at the boundary of the Devonian and Carboniferous periods. This allowed them to reconstruct the conditions under which deposits rich in organic matter accumulated. As Professor Vladimir Silantyev explained, 360 million years ago, a chain of narrow depressions passed through the territory of present-day Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, and Udmurtia. There were marine basins where sediments with a high organic content accumulated. Later, these deposits transformed into rocks from which oil can form. Scientists studied the cores of two wells in the Nizhnekamsk region. They examined the composition of the rocks, their structure, fossil remains, and the type of organic matter. This helped to understand how the environment in the ancient sea changed. "Such rocks are difficult to study. Fossils are rarely found in them, and they seem uniform. Conodonts—small tooth-like remains of ancient worm-like creatures—helped us," Silantyev explained to the KFU press service. With their help, scientists identified six types of rocks that formed under different conditions—from anoxic to oxygenated. This means that the conditions in the ancient sea changed constantly. The results of the research helped identify new areas where, according to preliminary data, there are significant hydrocarbon reserves.
