The book service Litres and VTB conducted a joint study and found out which animal, according to Russians, best reflects the strength of spirit and wisdom of the Russian people. An overwhelming majority – 79% – chose the bear, and 60% consider it the official symbol of the country. The survey was timed to coincide with the Eastern Economic Forum: the central image of VTB's new environmental campaign at the forum was the bear, and the results of the study show that the connection with nature and cultural code is still important for Russians. Among the books about nature and animals that respondents remembered the most, the story "White Bim Black Ear" by Gavriil Troepolsky leads with 14% of respondents naming it. In second place is "Umka" by Yuri Yakovlev (12%), and in third place is the Russian folk tale "Three Bears" (11%). Rounding out the top five are "Uncle Fyodor, the Dog and the Cat" by Eduard Uspensky (9%) and a collection of stories about animals by Viktor Astafyev, Mikhail Prishvin, Vitaly Bianki, Konstantin Paustovsky, and Nikolai Sladkov (8%). More than half of the respondents – 54% – believe that books about nature and animals help distract, provide positive emotions, and cope with stress. 61% of survey participants have children. Of these, 46% regularly read books about nature and animals to their child, while 40% do so from time to time. According to parents, among young readers, the most loved are "Uncle Fyodor, the Dog and the Cat" (16%), "Doctor Aibolit" by Korney Chukovsky (12%), and "Umka" (9%).
The survey took place in August 2026 among users of Litres and clients of VTB. More than 800 respondents from various cities in Russia participated. The list of works for selection mainly included classic and iconic books about nature and animals, well-known to several generations of readers.
