According to veterinary services, the main source of rabies spread in the Republic of Tatarstan continues to be foxes.
With the arrival of autumn, Tatarstan will face a new wave of dangerous diseases carried by wild animals. Veterinarians say that foxes, which are coming en masse to human dwellings in search of food, are of particular danger. They are the spreaders of a double threat—rabies and brucellosis, reports TNV.
Since the beginning of the year, rabies quarantine has already been declared 13 times in the republic, and the situation with brucellosis has seriously worsened over the past 28 years: for the first time since 1996 brucellosis has been recorded in nine districts of the republic. In the village of Sabakaevo in the Rybno-Slobodsky district alone, 33 cases of illness in animals have been identified. The cause is the unauthorized importation of infected livestock.
As previously stated by the deputy head of the Main Directorate of Veterinary Medicine of the Republic of Tatarstan, Gabdulkhak Motygullin, all enterprises have been instructed to ensure biological protection by November of this year. The corresponding order is being implemented and is under the special control of Minister Marat Zyabbarov.
Since the end of 2023, 34 cases of human infection with brucellosis have been identified. All these cases, according to the source, are associated with caring for an infected animal. It is important to remember that diseases such as rabies are untreatable and can lead to death. So far this year no human infections have been registered, but the risk remains extremely high.
Hunters and the State Committee of the Republic of Tatarstan for Bioresources are culling foxes, but of the 10,000 animals planned only 1,570 have been culled to date.
