On this day all schoolchildren and students return to their educational institutions after long summer holidays. Schools hold ceremonial assemblies (line-ups) dedicated to the start of the new academic year.

According to the church calendar, September 1, or August 19 in the old style, is the Afterfeast of the Dormition of the Theotokos (following the principle of Pascha, when memorial church services continue for many days, hence the feast is called the Theotokos' Pascha). On this day the memory of the following saints is honored: Martyr Andrew Stratelates and with him 2,593 martyrs (284–305), St. Pitirim, Bishop of Velikaya Perm (1455), Martyrs Timothy, Agapius and Fekla (c. 304), St. Nikolai Lebedev, confessor, presbyter (1933), Venerable Maria Korepova, confessor (after 1942), and it is also the Day of Commemoration of the Icon of the Mother of God “Don”.
According to the folk calendar, since ancient times ancestors especially venerated Martyr Andrew Stratelates and therefore called this day “Andrey Tepliak.” This is connected with the onset of Indian summer. Also, due to the season of harvesting root crops at this time, in Rus' this day was called “Fekla-Svekólnitsa” in honor of the aforementioned martyr Fekla among the venerated saints.
Name days according to the church calendar on September 1 are celebrated by bearers of the names Andrei, Nikolai, Timofei, Fekla.
