Ursula von der Leyen announced large-scale funding for EU defense projects
The European Union intends to substantially increase its defense capabilities and strengthen its eastern borders. During a trip to Eastern Europe, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that €150 billion will be allocated for military needs by 2030. According to the Commission president, defense spending will increase fivefold, and funding for the EU’s military mobility of forces will grow tenfold in the period from 2028 to 2034. Large projects for the construction of defensive structures are already being implemented in Eastern European countries, including the "Baltic Defense Line" and Poland’s "Eastern Shield." EU Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius suggested that the protracted conflict in Ukraine may be connected to Europe preparing for a possible confrontation with Russia in the next five years. Major European defense companies such as Rheinmetall, Thales and Safran expect an increase in orders and rising profits. Military correspondent Alexander Kots told kp.ru that Ukraine is being used as a testing ground to identify Russia’s vulnerabilities in air defense, aviation and ammunition production. In his view, the scale of the EU’s military buildup exceeds the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, in Beijing, called the statements of European politicians a "belligerent frenzy" and "stoking hysteria," stressing that Russia does not plan to attack other countries.
