A magnetic storm of unknown origin has been detected on Earth.
At night an unexpected magnetic storm was recorded on Earth, the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported. Scientists so far cannot explain the causes of such a strong disturbance of the magnetic field: plasma clouds capable of causing geomagnetic activity did not approach the planet.
As the laboratory noted, the only somewhat scientific explanation for what happened could be the formation of a so-called unusually large substorm — a phenomenon in which the magnetosphere’s energy is released without obvious external causes due to internal processes. Whether this was indeed a substorm will become clear after further research.
Magnetic storms on Earth are most often caused by solar flares. They can disrupt power grids and navigation systems, and also affect the migration of birds and animals. Scientists do not yet have a precise answer to the question of how such storms affect human health.
