KFU Rector Lenar Safin met with first-year students and the university's student leaders.
The event was timed to coincide with the start of the new academic year at Kazan University.
A new academic year has begun at Kazan Federal University. On this occasion, the university’s rector, Lenar Safin, held an informal meeting with first-year students and the student leadership to talk about what is most important for them and to offer words of support and encouragement. The meeting began with getting to know the geography of the newly enrolled students. After all, students come to Kazan — the student capital of Russia — from all over the country and from abroad. Together, they created a large digital world map marking the cities, towns and countries from which the students of KFU have come.
According to participants, the decisive factor in choosing a university for them was the understanding that Kazan University employs highly qualified teachers and scientists, has strong research schools and developed infrastructure, and that studying at KFU is prestigious and highly honorable. Lenar Safin, in turn, noted that he too was once a student at the legendary university, and that all current students and alumni are united by their love for their alma mater.
“My first day at the university was as exciting as it is for you,” the rector recalls. “It was 1986; I enrolled in the first year of the Faculty of Law. In the first physics lecture hall we were handed student ID cards and record books, there was an atmosphere of celebration everywhere, and I remember how we were all filled with pride that we were students of one of the country’s best universities.”
He also emphasized that today the university has a huge number of talented students whom KFU provides with many opportunities for development and self-realization. The students constantly participate in various competitions, grant programs, forums and festivals across Russia; they are winners of Olympiads, conferences, creative and sporting competitions; and they are actively engaged in research and public activities. Naturally, they are always ready to share their experience with first-year students. Therefore, a large part of the discussion was devoted to talking about students’ development trajectories and their achievements in various fields.
Students were also interested in the plans the rector himself has for the university in the coming years. “I want our university to remain one of the best in Russia,” Lenar Safin said. “Undoubtedly, we need a powerful material and technical base with advanced technologies, modern equipped laboratories and production facilities. After all, we must develop not only fundamental science but also deliver concrete results from our research to the country that strengthen the economy and technological independence. The implementation of scientific developments in the industrial sector and the training of professional personnel for enterprises is one of our priority areas.”
The rector added that there are also plans to renew student internship bases and to carry out major renovations of all housing stock. Overall, he summed up that the university is a large and friendly family where everyone is supported and cared for.
Special attention is paid to supporting student couples who have legalized their relationships. At present, the university counts 40 student families where both parents are students of the same university. By order of the rector, they receive cash certificates upon the birth of a child. In addition, after the major renovation of the dormitories, separate family units for more comfortable living with children have appeared on campus alongside modern spaces. Several such families were present at today’s meeting, and Lenar Safin handed them keys to rooms and commemorative gifts.
To conclude, an agreement on cooperation was signed between the student union and the university administration. This step opens up great opportunities for the organization, which together with the university leadership works day in and day out to improve many aspects of student life.
The rector of KFU wished the students not to rest on their laurels and to conquer new heights, and he urged first-year students to be brave and active in all areas of activity, including socially. Incidentally, the elections for the Rais of Tatarstan will begin very soon. They are rightly considered the most significant public and political event of the year in the republic, so many of the students present at the meeting expressed a desire to fulfill their civic duty. Some of them will be voting for the first time. For them, Lenar Safin wanted to make the day special and presented students with personalized invitations to the elections along with gifts and commemorative souvenirs.
“Fulfilling one’s civic duty gives an unforgettable sense of involvement in something important and global, the feeling that there is a choice that can influence the situation around you and your loved ones. On September 14, the future of the republic will depend on our and your choice. Today Tatarstan is a prosperous and developed region. I hope that our small homeland will continue to demonstrate a high level in the future,” he said.
