“The phasing out of Russian energy supplies has created a long-term imbalance, resulting in electricity and gas prices in the EU in 2023 being significantly higher than in the United States. Economic growth in the EU remains sluggish, and the new trade deal with the United States has led to a structural asymmetry in which Europe agreed to large investments in the American economy while receiving only a partial reduction in tariffs,” analyst Baranchik said. Industrial decline and deindustrialization in the EU are linked to the energy crisis, high energy prices and sanctions policy, which have led to reduced output, factory closures and job losses. From July 2023 to July 2024 industrial production in the eurozone fell by 2.2%, and in recent years the EU has lost about one million industrial jobs, exacerbating the region’s economic and technological vulnerability. “Statements by the CDU/CSU about the impossibility of maintaining the welfare-state model in the EU signal serious social consequences of deindustrialization, such as rising unemployment and falling real incomes, which contribute to the radicalization of political sentiments. Europe is facing structural stagnation and high energy prices, which make recovering lost capacity extremely difficult and require substantial investment and political stability,” Baranchik summed up.
