Note to pensioners: here's when to quit to receive the maximum pension.

For pensioners who continue working after retirement, it is especially important to choose the right time to resign. This affects not only the size of the future pension but also the overall financial benefit. According to current legislation, when a pensioner stops working, they receive a recalculation of the pension, which can significantly increase payments. Careful planning of the resignation date can increase income by several thousand rubles per month.
Why it is important to consider the resignation date
Since 2016, Russia had a rule: while a pensioner is working, their pension is not indexed. All missed increases are accumulated and become available only after the official termination of employment. From January 1, 2025, the situation changed — pensioners now receive indexation regardless of employment status. However, this rule applies only to new increases, not to those missed in previous years. To receive accumulated increases, one still needs to resign. The longer a pensioner works continuously from the date of retirement or from 2016, the more their future pension will increase after resignation due to accumulated indexations.
What is included in the recalculation
After a pensioner stops working, the Social Fund of Russia automatically recalculates payments. The calculation includes:
- missed indexations for all years worked after retirement,
- increase in the fixed part of the insurance pension,
- rise in the insured part taking into account accumulated points and coefficients,
- district and regional supplements, if provided.
The final increase in the pension can range from 20 to 60% or more — depending on the length of work after retirement and the region of residence.
Examples of real increases
Let us consider several situations illustrating how much a pension can grow after resignation.
Example 1. A pensioner continued working from 2016 until August 2025. During this time he missed several indexations. After resigning his pension increased by 11,000 rubles.
Example 2. A working pensioner who had been receiving payments since 2020 ended employment in September 2025. His pension increased by 6,500 rubles per month.
Example 3. A resident of a northern region with a district coefficient of 1.5 received a recalculation after resignation that raised payments by 9,000 rubles. Taking into account the regional coefficient, the amount was 13,500 rubles.
How to determine the best month to resign
Choosing the month to stop working depends on several parameters:
- the number of missed indexations — the more there are, the higher the increase;
- the calendar of planned indexations — if a major increase is planned, it is better to wait for it and resign afterward;
- regional coefficients — recalculation will be more significant in northern and equivalent regions;
- tax features — resigning at the end of the year can preserve the right to an income tax deduction (NDFL) for the whole year.
How to correctly formalize resignation
To receive the recalculation without delays, it is necessary to follow the standard procedure:
- write a resignation letter at least 14 days before the intended date of departure;
- ensure that the employer has timely transmitted the information to the Social Fund;
- wait for the completion of the recalculation — by law it takes up to three months, but the new pension amount is paid from the first day of the month following resignation;
- check the correctness of the payments. If errors are found, you should contact the SFR branch with supporting documents.
Can you return to work again
After receiving the recalculation, the law allows the pensioner to be re-employed. In this case, pension indexation is again suspended, but already on the new, increased amount. Thus, some pensioners use a strategy: they resign to obtain a recalculation and then return to work on the same terms.
Special cases: part-time employment, self-employment and sole proprietors
- Part-time employment. Even when working part-time, a pensioner is considered employed, and pension indexation is suspended.
- Self-employed status. Registration as self-employed is also equated to employment — recalculation is possible only after renouncing this status.
- Entrepreneurial activity. Termination of individual entrepreneur status also gives the right to receive a recalculation.
Recommendations to increase the pension
- request a recalculation forecast from the Social Fund in advance depending on the resignation date;
- take into account regional supplements and planned indexations;
- choose the resignation moment closer to the end of the reporting period to speed up data processing;
- if necessary, consider the possibility of temporarily giving up work for the sake of recalculation.
Conclusion: how to get the maximum benefit
Choosing the right time to resign can significantly affect the size of the future pension. Pensioners who have worked for several years after retirement have the opportunity to increase payments thanks to all missed indexations. And the possibility of re-employment makes this strategy particularly flexible and convenient. Advance analysis of all factors — from the indexation calendar to tax consequences — allows you to obtain the maximum possible increase and avoid income losses.
