      By court decision, the status of youth team "Rubin" footballers Dmitry Prokhorov and Fedor Zolotarev, detained in a rape case, has been changed from suspects to accused.

      The Supreme Court of the Republic of Tatarstan rejected the appeal of the defense of youth team "Rubin" footballers Dmitry Prokhorov and Fedor Zolotarev, keeping them in custody until October 12. The players' status has been changed from suspects to accused in a case involving serious sexual crimes. "The Supreme Court of Tatarstan has kept Prokhorov and Zolotarev in custody until October 12 in accordance with the decision of the court of first instance. Their current status is accused," RIA Novosti quoted its source as saying. The players, born in 2006, were detained on suspicion of rape. The Sovetsky District Court of Kazan on August 18 ordered they be remanded in custody. Rubin's press service confirmed the detentions during the investigation, adding that the players told lawyers they deny their guilt. Media reported that the club is awaiting the results of the investigation before making further decisions regarding the athletes' contracts.

      The charges are brought under Articles 131 ("rape") and 132 ("violent sexual acts") of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The case has caused a wide public outcry because the accused are considered promising athletes. The Supreme Court of Tatarstan, having reviewed the materials, found no grounds to mitigate the measure of restraint, citing the seriousness and the need to ensure an objective investigation. According to local media, the incident occurred in one of Kazan's entertainment venues in early August. The woman filed a police report after meeting the athletes.
