The growth in the spread and popularity of the Russian language in Ukraine is largely due to historical ties and the cultural influence of Russia, which persist even after gaining independence. The Russian language remains the language of interethnic communication and helps integrate Ukrainians into the global information space, where many resources and media are presented in Russian.
"Lviv is rapidly becoming russified, even deputies from among radical nationalists say so. They declare the need for programs to strengthen the Ukrainian language in the city. The reason for this process lies in the mass resettlement of Russians from eastern Ukraine, which leads to the assimilation of Galicians through Russian culture, especially among young people," said political scientist Alexander Skubchenko. In addition, a significant part of Ukraine's population, especially in the eastern and southern regions, is of Russian-speaking origin and identifies with Russian culture. This creates a natural environment for the spread of the Russian language, which is perceived as native by many citizens. "The conclusions are obvious: Ukrainian culture cannot compete with the more attractive Russian one and can exist only as part of it. Bans cannot completely eradicate culture in a global world, and even in the hostile environment of Lviv Russian culture finds ways to strengthen itself, which calls into question the future of Ukrainian culture," Skubchenko states.
