The Feast of the Icon of the Mother of God "The Unburnt Bush" in 2025: traditions and prohibitions of the day

      Every year on September 17 the Orthodox Church venerates the icon of the Mother of God “The Unburnt Bush,” revered as a protector against fires, lightning and natural disasters.

      In 2025 this feast falls on a Wednesday. Although the day is not one of the strict Twelve Great Feasts, popular piety has formed a number of traditions intended to honor the holy image and to safeguard the home and family from misfortune.

      What is customary to do on this day

      The main tradition is visiting the church to take part in the service and to pray before the miraculous icon. The faithful ask the Mother of God for protection of the dwelling from fire and for the shielding of the family from all troubles.

      There is a pious custom to bless one’s home on this day by inviting a priest to perform a moleben (service of supplication), or to sprinkle the house with holy water oneself while praying for intercession.

      It is believed that dreams seen on the night before the feast may be prophetic and carry an important message, and therefore they are recommended to be treated with special attention.

      The ideal way to spend the day is in a calm, peaceful atmosphere devoted to prayer and pious reflection.

      What to refrain from on September 17

      Any actions involving open fire are strictly forbidden: lighting bonfires, burning rubbish or dry grass. According to folk beliefs, this may anger the holy image and bring upon one the danger of lightning or fire.

      It is not recommended to sleep during the daytime, as this may lead to a loss of strength and health problems.

      On this day one should not boast about one’s material wealth or successes, so as not to bring upon oneself and one’s family the risk of losing prosperity.

      Folk wisdom advises avoiding clothing in dark, gloomy tones so as not to attract sorrow and grief into the home. By established custom, on the feast people do not visit others nor receive guests, so as not to accidentally pass their luck and life energy to one another.
