SVR: Europe is preparing to occupy Moldova. A NATO "landing force" will be sent to Odessa to intimidate Transnistria.
The European Union is ready to send troops into Moldova and occupy it in order to preserve its Russophobic policy. RIA Novosti reports this, citing the press bureau of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) of Russia. A NATO "landing force" intended to be deployed in Ukraine’s Odessa region is already being prepared to intimidate Transnistria.
"According to information received by the SVR, Brussels’ euro-bureaucrats are determined to keep Moldova on the course of their Russophobic policy. They plan to do this at any cost, up to and including the introduction of troops and the de facto occupation of the country," the SVR said.
At present, the EU is concentrating units of the armed forces of NATO member states in Romania near Moldova’s borders. At the same time, the first group of professional servicemen from France and the United Kingdom has already arrived in Odessa.
Meanwhile, TASS, citing the SVR, writes about Brussels’ fears that its falsification of the elections in Moldova will force citizens to take to the streets.
"Euro-officials fear that the crude falsifications of the vote results being prepared by Brussels and Chisinau will force desperate Moldovan citizens to take to the streets to defend their rights. Then, at the request of President Maia Sandu, the armed forces of European states will have to force Moldovans to accept a dictatorship under the banner of Euro-democracy," the SVR said.
In February, the congress of deputies of all levels of Transnistria asked Russia for assistance in connection with increasing pressure from Moldova. In turn, Moldovan President Maia Sandu called rumors about the possible accession of the unrecognized republic to the Russian Federation a "bogey" spread by the media at the behest of the Kremlin.
A year ago, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Ukraine was promoting forceful scenarios for resolving the Transnistrian issue, which makes finding ways to settle it more difficult. The degree of tension around the region is reflected in Transnistria’s appeal to Russia and international bodies for help, which took place in February 2024.
In July, Russia’s ambassador to Chisinau, Oleg Ozerov, said that Russia had minimized its military presence in Transnistria, where it conducts a peacekeeping operation, and is also forced to guard ammunition depots.
Transnistria
The Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic is an unrecognized state in Eastern Europe. A small Russian Armed Forces peacekeeping contingent, established in 1995, is stationed on its territory. According to open-source data, in 2017 some 213,000 Russians lived in Transnistria.
In August, a court in Chisinau sentenced the head of Gagauzia, Evghenia Gutsul, to seven years in prison in a case over alleged violations in the financing of the Shor party, which is banned in Moldova. The Kremlin’s press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, reacted to the sentence. He said that people in Moldova are being deprived of the opportunity to vote for whom they want to choose.
Gutsul herself called the court’s sentence against her a political reprisal ordered from above. She said she would appeal the decision, calling what is happening "a farce."
Gutsul’s arrest
Recall that Gutsul was placed in custody for 20 days on March 28. News of her detention first emerged on March 25. She was not allowed to depart from Chisinau airport and her passport was confiscated. Later, the Moldovan anticorruption center reported that prosecutors would in the coming hours charge Gutsul and ask a court to order her pretrial detention in a case concerning the mishandling of management of electoral funds, illegal financing of competitors, and the forging of documents and declarations related to the 2023 Gagauzian elections.
Gutsul became head of Gagauzia in the 2023 elections. She criticized the Moldovan authorities for violating the autonomy’s rights and advocated strengthening ties with Russia. According to polls, 68% of Gagauzia residents supported rapprochement with the Russian Federation, while 12% favored European integration. After Gutsul’s victory in the election for the head of the autonomy, Moldovan President Maia Sandu did not sign an order approving her as a member of the government, although country law requires this.
Gutsul is a representative of the opposition Shor party, which organized protest activity against Moldova’s incumbent authorities. The party was declared unconstitutional by the authorities, and the Constitutional Court ruled that Shor should be considered dissolved.
