A resident of Veliky Novgorod was sentenced to 15 years for espionage on behalf of Ukraine.

      The court handed down a sentence to a man who was accused of collecting and transmitting information about security forces and a defense-industry enterprise in Veliky Novgorod. According to the Novgorod Region prosecutor’s office, in May 2023 he contacted employees of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine via messaging apps. In June of the same year, at the behest of his handlers he monitored the location of a military unit and the situation within security agencies. The man also planned to transmit data about the products of the defense-industrial enterprise where he worked, but, having discovered that he was under surveillance, deleted the collected information. Taking into account the position of the state prosecutor, the court sentenced the man to 15 years of imprisonment. He will spend the first five years in prison, and the remaining term in a maximum-security penal colony. The verdict has not yet come into legal force and may be appealed.
