      More than 2,000 foreign citizens are in Tatarstan illegally. The strictest measures will be taken against them, Marat Galeev, head of the Migration Affairs Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Republic of Tatarstan, said at a meeting of the Council of the Assembly of the Peoples of the RT in Zelenodolsk District.

      In September the deadline for migrants’ legalization set by a decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin expired. Within the established period, foreigners illegally staying in Russia could legalize their legal status or leave the country.

      According to Galeev, more than 2,500 foreign citizens took advantage of this right. “Unfortunately, roughly the same number are currently in the republic illegally. The names of all these categories of persons are known to us. A register of controlled persons has been formed in accordance with the law,” he said.

      The department head added that in Tatarstan this year 18,000 individuals and legal entities have been held liable for violations of migration legislation. Of these, more than 10,000 foreigners were punished for violating the terms of their stay in Russia.

      “Our agency carries out control measures to identify violators of migration legislation. I do not want to say that their number has increased, but it has not decreased compared to last year,” he emphasized.

      Galeev specified that 643 instances of illegal employment of foreign citizens were identified. More than a thousand employers will be brought to administrative responsibility.
