      In Rus' October 22 was called Yakov Drovopilets or Yakov the Frosty, associating it with the start of preparations for winter. The main traditions of the day were connected with summing up the autumn and preparing for the cold:

      Firewood gathering: the day was considered suitable for beginning to stockpile firewood for the winter.

      Communal meals: it was customary to cook porridge from the new harvest grain, bake pies and treat neighbors, workers and the needy. It was believed that such hospitality would bring prosperity and health to the home.

      End of the mushroom season: after this date people no longer went to the forest for mushrooms, believing the season to be closed.

      What not to do on October 22:

      Do not start new important undertakings. It was believed that anything begun on this day would fall apart and bring nothing but trouble.

      Do not do needlework. There was a strict prohibition on sewing, knitting and any work with a needle, so as not to “sew on” misfortune.

      Do not refuse treats when visiting. Such a refusal could lead to quarrels and even create enemies.

      Do not visit empty-handed. According to beliefs, this foretold poverty.

      Do not take on heavy physical labor and do not squander your strength pointlessly, so as not to lose vital energy.

      Do not recall old grievances or quarrel, especially in the presence of children, so as not to bring on new disputes and illnesses.
