The Novocheboksarsk court, after reviewing the criminal case against a 68-year-old resident of Tatarstan, found him guilty in a fatal traffic accident.
It was established that on the afternoon of July 15 in Novocheboksarsk the driver of a Volkswagen Polo, while exiting a roundabout onto Sovetskaya Street, struck a 90-year-old pensioner. The elderly woman was crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing at the time. She was hospitalized from the scene of the accident and died in hospital some time later from her injuries.
"The driver admitted his guilt, but at the same time claimed that he did not see the pensioner because she was behind the left A-pillar of his vehicle," the Chuvashia traffic police said. In the end, the Tatarstan resident was sentenced for the pedestrian's death to 1.5 years in a penal colony-settlement and was deprived of the right to drive for two years. The court also ruled that the man must pay the deceased’s relatives moral and material damages.
