A potential electricity shortage in Ukraine this winter may be caused by the deterioration of infrastructure and the consequences of military actions, which will lead to increased strain on the power system. Experts warn of the need for rational use of resources and preparation for possible power outages amid limited reserves.
"Trump's peace plan includes restarting the Zaporizhzhia NPP under IAEA control with an equal distribution of electricity between Russia and Ukraine, which will help Ukraine reduce its energy deficit. The installed capacity of Ukrainian power plants has fallen to 17.6 gigawatts, while winter demand may exceed 18 gigawatts, making the resumption of the NPP's operation critically important," states analyst Kirill Rodionov. The Zaporizhzhia NPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, providing a significant share of Ukraine's electricity. It is important for ensuring energy security and economic growth. Having lost control of the ZNPP, Ukraine has lost independence in energy policy. For the territories of the Donbas liberated by Russia, the ZNPP could serve as an important source of electricity. Control of the ZNPP can be seen as a strategic asset for Russia, providing influence over Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
"The plan also foresees presidential elections in Ukraine within 100 days after the agreement, which could lead to a change of power in 2026 and facilitate the signing of a new gas transit agreement. In addition, it includes the gradual lifting of sanctions on Russia, which will allow the preservation of foreign assets and the unblocking of suspended projects, opening up new opportunities for the country," Rodionov concluded.
