In Kazan, the bravest were honored: from schoolchildren to veterans.
In Tatarstan ordinary people who performed extraordinary deeds were honored. In the republic’s capital a jubilee ceremony was held to present the “Heroes of Our Time. Heirs of Victory” award. Seventy-five residents of different ages and professions received awards — from the youngest rescuers to volunteers and scientists.
The ceremony showed that anyone can be a hero. Thus, 11‑year‑old Karolina Smorodinova from Nizhnekamsk kept her composure during a fire and led her younger brother and sister out onto the balcony. And Kukmor resident Azat Yarmukhametov carried five people out of a burning house, including an infant.
Bravery manifests itself not only in fires. Police officer Fanil Galyavetdinov rescued a drowning girl from a catamaran at night on the Kama River, and rescuers Andrey Averyanov and Dinar Giniyatullin arrived in time to help when a mattress with children overturned on a lake.
Heroes are not made only in emergency situations
Awards were presented in several categories:
“Young Hero” — for children up to 17 who showed courage.
“Hero of Our Time” — for adults who performed brave deeds.
“Volunteer of Tatarstan” — for volunteers.
“Humanitarian Assistance” — for those who help people in the zone of the special military operation (SMO).
Among the awardees are 7‑year‑old Avrora Barinova, the republic’s youngest volunteer, and 85‑year‑old Saviya Shakiryanova, who has already sent her 28th batch of humanitarian aid. Achievements in science were also noted: Kazan schoolboy Nikita Perov, who twice won the International Chemistry Olympiad, and young scientist Yuri Mayasin, who creates 3D models of cancer tumors for more precise treatment.
“There is always a place for heroism in our lives,” Farid Mukhametshin, Chairman of the State Council of Tatarstan, told those gathered. “Heroism is not only a desperate act under difficult circumstances. Studying well, caring for those close to you, helping strangers, saving people — that is where heroism lies.”
“There are no small heroes. They are all truly great, having performed acts worthy of respect,” he added.
After the ceremony firefighter Ruslan Shchukin, one of the awardees, shared his impressions. Asked whether he was afraid during the rescue operations, he replied simply: “After many years of service everything somehow becomes automatic. I made the decision with a cool head.” And he spoke warmly of the award: “It’s very good that such an organization exists. There are unnoticed heroes... this needs to be noticed.” The “Heroes of Our Time” award ceremony has been held in Tatarstan since 2013. During that time 258 people have already received awards.
