The first crematorium in Kazan will be built next to the Kurgan memorial.
A site has been chosen, studies are complete, and construction of the republic’s first crematorium is expected to begin at the “Kurgan” memorial complex. This was reported during the week. Victoria Vladimirova will describe what the crematorium will be like and when it will be commissioned.
Talks about building a crematorium in Kazan lasted almost two decades — from the first discussions in 2013 to attempts to launch the project in 2020. But each time the matter was postponed. Currently local companies only organize transportation — the deceased are sent either to Sarapul or to Nizhny Novgorod. A service that looks available online turns out in practice to be long, expensive, and inconvenient for residents.
“For many people cremation is both a religious and a financial decision. We need a crematorium.”
“I think it’s necessary. Because many people want to be cremated,” say Kazan residents.
And now, five years later, the site and contractor have been determined.
This vacant lot by the “Kurgan” memorial complex is a new point in solving a long-standing problem for Kazan. The project is entering a practical phase for the first time — engineering studies are complete, and construction of the republic’s first crematorium will soon begin here.
“The project envisions construction of a crematorium with an area of 1,635 square meters on a 2.3-hectare plot. The facility will include two farewell halls for comfortable ceremonies and two modern cremation furnaces with minimal emissions and high energy efficiency,” say representatives of the developer company about the future project.
The cremation process takes on average two to three hours — high temperatures in the chamber completely reduce the remains to ash.
“Placing such enterprises at cemeteries is justified, because a cemetery itself, by creating a large area not developed by other enterprises that pollute the atmospheric air, also creates a certain buffer for the dilution of these gases to acceptable concentrations,” explains Anton Bortyakov, a biologist and member of the council of the Tatarstan Republican Organization of the All‑Russian Society for Nature Protection.
Environmental safety in crematoria will be ensured by multi-stage filters. According to sanitary norms such facilities are located away from housing, because when operating correctly they cause minimal harm. The ashes are sifted, cleaned of any foreign materials, and handed over to the family in an urn or capsule.
“In addition, the memorial complex grounds will include construction of a columbarium, which will allow residents to conveniently and respectfully place urns with ashes,” says a representative of the developer company.
The crematorium will be able to carry out up to 9,500 cremations per year. People will have a choice between traditional burial and cremation within the city.
“Well, generally a cemetery takes up a lot of space and is harmful; it affects the water. Do you think it’s needed? I think yes. It’s the decision of the relatives and the deceased.”
“To be honest, I would like to be cremated so as not to take up space,” say Kazan residents.
The estimated cost of one cremation is from 19,000 to 33,000 rubles depending on the level of services provided. The facility is planned to be commissioned in 2029.
