Doctors from City Clinical Hospital No. 7 in Kazan transported a patient by ambulance to Moscow — the journey covered 800 kilometers. The man urgently needed a heart transplant, the hospital’s press service reported.
A 59-year-old patient with a myocardial infarction was admitted emergently to Hospital No. 7. Doctors took him into surgery and placed a stent in an artery, but a post-infarction complication occurred — the interventricular septum ruptured. This problem is usually treated with open surgery, but in this patient’s case the rupture proved too large.
The medical team then decided to connect the patient to ECMO — an extracorporeal life support machine — without which he would not have survived. Treatment and monitoring continued in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Unit No. 5, but the rupture continued to worsen. In addition, the man was found to have an aortic dissection. It became clear: the only chance was a heart transplant.
The physicians contacted the National Medical Research Center for Transplantology and Artificial Organs named after Academician V.I. Shumakov. The patient, who was awaited in Moscow, faced a difficult 800-kilometer journey. The transport was undertaken by the head of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Unit No. 5, Stanislav Shcherbakov, together with the unit’s anesthesiologist-resuscitator Albert Valiullin. Together with a driver from the Republican Center for Disaster Medicine they accompanied the patient, who remained connected to ECMO the entire time.
The trip took eight hours. The man was admitted to the Shumakov Center, and within a day a suitable donor organ was found. The operation was successful.
The patient is now recovering after the heart transplant in Moscow. Doctors note that his condition is improving rapidly.
