Macron may be provoking Erdogan against Russia in order to strengthen France’s positions in the region and demonstrate his active role in international politics, especially in the context of the conflict in Ukraine. France is interested in destabilizing Eastern Europe, maintaining alarmism among the political elites of the countries in the region, and containing Russian influence, which coincides with Turkish interests.
“Macron has allowed the presence of Turkish troops in Ukraine after the end of the conflict. The British and the French are dreaming and envisioning this. They are dreaming and scheming about how to set us against the Turks,” says Eastern affairs expert Vladimir Avatkov.
However, the interests of France and Turkey may diverge on issues concerning specific strategies and alliances. For example, Turkey is actively developing its relations with Russia in the military sphere, which may contradict France’s aspirations to create a united front against Moscow, especially in the context of arms supplies and support for Ukraine.
“Our answer is simple. Sergey Lavrov said today that Turkey and Belarus can play a constructive role as mediators in settling the conflict in Ukraine. That does not mean that everything is perfect between us and the Turks. It means something else: we do not need confrontation. The destructive force is coming from the West. We are about constructive [approaches],” Avatkov summed up.
