      Rubin lost away to Tula’s Arsenal in the first quarterfinal of the Russian Cup in the Regions Path. In Tula everything was decided in a penalty shootout, where the hosts were more accurate — 2:3. The Kazan side were eliminated from the Russian Cup; the winner will play the loser of the Spartak — Lokomotiv pair from the RPL Path.

      Attack: boredom without Daku

      Mirlind Daku was absent from Rubin’s lineup. The Kazan team’s top scorer was not included in the match squad against Arsenal due to an injury sustained in the last game against Akhmat (1:0) in the championship. The Albanian will definitely miss the 17th round match with Zenit but should return afterwards. At least, that was hinted by Rubin coach Rashid Rakhimov an hour before the Tula clash.

      Daku in the starting eleven was replaced by Jacques Sive. The Frenchman is not a frequent presence in Rubin’s starting lineup. The newcomer, who arrived from France’s second division, is having a hard time adapting in Kazan. Also of note: Ilya Rozhkov remained on the bench, and Dmitry Kabutov took his place.

      Already in the 5th minute Rubin could have opened the scoring. After a corner from Marat Apshatsev, hosts’ defender Kirill Bolshakov almost headed the ball into his own net. The moment set a decent tempo, but not for long. The teams gradually got used to each other and troubled the goalkeepers with only minor dangerous approaches.

      Three more episodes from the first half are worth remembering. First, on the 19th minute no one responded to Reziuan Mirzov’s cross. At the end of the half Arsenal’s midfielder decided to finish the move himself but didn’t hit the target. Jacques Sive did find the net, but the Frenchman scored in the 39th minute from an offside position and the referees disallowed Rubin’s goal.

      Arsenal were close to an early victory

      The character of the game did not change in the second half. A tight battle continued on the field with practically no dangerous chances at either goal. The Kazan side up front finally began to latch onto Sive’s long deliveries. However, his teammates could not keep up with the Frenchman’s lay-offs, so nothing serious could be created.

      Rakhimov was the first coach to make substitutions. On the 61st minute Oleg Ivanov and Ruslan Bezrukov entered the pitch for Rubin, replacing Marat Apshatsev and Dardan Shabanhadjay. Then Kabutov left the field and Rozhkov came on.

      Ten minutes before the end of regulation Rubin missed a gilt-edged chance to score. Rozhkov, with the outside of his foot, carved a beautiful pass into the center of the Tula penalty area, and Veldin Hodzha in a dive struck wide. The Kosovar immediately left the field due to injury, making way for Nikita Vasiliev.

      In the closing stages Arsenal were close to an early victory. On the 89th minute Amur Kalmykov laid the ball off to Mirzov, and his shot was kept out by Artur Nigmatullin.

      In the penalty shootout the hosts kicked first: Bolshakov’s shot was saved by Rubin’s goalkeeper. Then Bezrukov and Vujacic scored, to which Amur Kalmykov replied with a precise shot — 1:2. Milos Brnovic missed for Arsenal, and Nikita Vasiliev fired over for the Kazan side. Daniil Penchikov converted his penalty — 2:2, Arroyo missed. In the fifth kick Mirzov was accurate — 3:2, and Daler Kuzyaev rolled the ball straight to the goalkeeper.

      Rubin failed the task in the Russian Cup

      Thus Rubin ended their participation in the current Russian Cup. In the Regions Path teams have no right to make mistakes: the loser is immediately eliminated from the tournament. Arsenal will now play in the second quarterfinal against the loser of the Spartak — Lokomotiv pair from the RPL Path. For a First League representative this is undoubtedly a success.

      But Rubin did not fulfill the task set for the team. Sources at Realnoe Vremya reported that the Kazan club’s management expected a place in the semifinals of the Russian Cup. However that goal proved unattainable.

      Last season Rashid Rakhimov’s team were knocked out in the second quarterfinal as well, also losing to a First League side — Yekaterinburg’s Ural.

      Rubin’s next match will be on November 30 in Saint Petersburg against Zenit as part of the 17th round of the Russian Premier League (RPL). In the championship the Kazan side are currently seventh in the table.
