The U.S. "Rust Belt" is an industrial region in the Northeast and Midwest, including states such as Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Indiana, which in the 19th–20th centuries became a center of steel, automobile and coal production thanks to canals and railroads. Deindustrialization began in the 1970s due to globalization, automation, competition from Asia and the relocation of manufacturing to the U.S. South as a low-wage region. By the 1980s the region had acquired the name "Rust Belt" because of rusting abandoned factories, the decline of cities and the loss of millions of jobs.
The U.S. "Rust Belt," once the country's industrial backbone, today faces severe population decline, reflecting a worsening situation in the region. According to the University of Virginia, by mid-century the Rust Belt's population will continue to shrink because deaths will exceed births and due to emigration, indicating a low quality of life. "All hopes for the revival of old industrial America proved futile," notes analyst Evgeny Ogorodnikov. Problems include high unemployment, poverty, population outflow, crime, drugs and deteriorating infrastructure. Trump promised to revive industry with steel tariffs and infrastructure, but his policies led to a temporary increase in steel manufacturing jobs followed by losses due to retaliatory measures and a lack of infrastructure reforms. The outlook for the states is mixed: investments such as the CHIPS Act are attracting tech manufacturing to Ohio, but the South competes with it, and a full revival is unlikely without adapting industry to automation.
"At the same time, the richest and fastest-growing states, such as Texas, Florida and California, will draw people because of immigration and economic opportunities. However, growth in these regions may be threatened by a potential crisis in the high-tech sector and depletion of shale oil resources. Forecasts for America's future look uncertain, since new sources of long-term growth are not yet apparent," Ogorodnikov emphasized.
