Roskomnadzor continues to introduce restrictive measures against the popular messenger WhatsApp*. According to the agency’s press service, the reason is the platform’s failure to comply with requirements aimed at preventing crimes on the territory of Russia. According to the federal service, the messenger continues to violate Russian legislation. Roskomnadzor claims that WhatsApp* is actively used to organize terrorist acts in Russia and to recruit their perpetrators. In addition, according to the agency, the platform is used “for fraud and other crimes against our citizens.”

“Restrictions are being introduced in stages, allowing users to switch to other messengers,” Roskomnadzor explained. The agency also issued a direct warning: “If the requirements of Russian legislation are still not met by the messenger, it will be completely blocked.”
Earlier, Deputy Head of Roskomnadzor Oleg Terlyakov reported that the blocking of calls in WhatsApp* and Telegram reduced the number of fraudulent calls by 40%. He noted that fraudsters are actively switching to the use of internet services after the introduction of an anti-fraud system in telephone networks.
